Applications Open: 2026/2027 Commonwealth Shared Scholarships


The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC) administers the UK government scholarship scheme, guided by international development objectives. Operating under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP), it showcases the UK’s longstanding commitment to the Commonwealth.

Purpose

To contribute to the development needs of Commonwealth countries by providing training for skilled and qualified professionals and academics who would not otherwise have the opportunity to study in the UK.

Intended Beneficiaries

High-quality postgraduate students from Least Developed and middle-income countries(including fragile and conflict-affected states) who:

* Have not studied for a year or more in a high-income country before.

* Would otherwise be unable to afford to study in the UK.

* Have the potential to enhance the development of their home countries through the knowledge and leadership skills acquired.

Award Duration

Normally 12 months.

Candidate Eligibility

To be considered for the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships, candidates must:

* Be a citizen of, or have been granted refugee status by, an eligible Commonwealth country.

* Be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.

* Be available to start academic studies in the UK by September 2026.

* By September 2026, hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honors standard, or a lower second-class degree and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master’s degree).

* Not have studied or worked for more than one (academic) year in a high-income country.

* Be unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship.

* Provide all required supporting documentation in the correct format.

Benefits

1. Financial Assistance

The Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are jointly funded by the CSC and participating UK universities. Each scholarship covers:

* Airfare: Approved flight from the scholar’s home country to the UK and return at the end of the award.

* Tuition Fees: Fully covered by agreement between the CSC and the university.

2. Stipend (Living Allowance):

  * £1,452 per month, or

  * £1,781 per month for scholars studying in the London metropolitan area.

3. Warm Clothing Allowance: Where applicable.

4. Thesis Grant: To cover the cost of preparing a thesis or dissertation.

5. Study Travel Grant: For study-related travel within the UK or overseas.

6. TB Test Contribution: Reimbursement for mandatory tuberculosis (TB) test costs (with receipts).

7. Child Allowance:

  * £622 per month for the first child,

  * £154 per month for the second and third child (under 16),

    for widowed, divorced, or single parents living with their children in the UK

How to Apply

Applications for the 2026/2027 Commonwealth Shared Scholarships open at 16:30 GMT on Wednesday, 12 November 2025, for study beginning in September/October 2026.

Application Deadline: Tuesday, 9 December 2025, at 16:00 GMT.

Applications must be submitted via the CSC’s online application system (CSC Central).

The CSC will not accept applications or supporting documents submitted outside the online system.
