NIAS Safe Haven Fellowship 2026 – Fully Funded in the Netherlands

Applications are now open for the NIAS Safe Haven Fellowship 2026, a fully funded 5-month fellowship hosted by the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This fellowship is designed for scholars, writers, artists, and journalists who are unable to safely carry out their work in their home countries due to war, conflict, or restrictions on freedom.

Fellowship Overview

  * September 2026 – January 2027

The Safe Haven Fellowship offers temporary relocation in a secure academic environment, enabling fellows to continue their work without fear.

Research Scope

Fellows are free to work on a research project of their own choice, as long as it falls within the humanities or social sciences.

Financial Benefits

The fellowship is fully funded and includes:

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Nationality: Open to candidates from all countries
  2. English Proficiency: Must have a good command of English
  3. Physical Presence: Must be available on-site at NIAS at least 4 days a week

Additional Requirements by Proposal Type:

* For Scientific Proposals: At least three years of post-PhD research experience required at the time of application

* For Artistic or Journalistic Proposals: No PhD or research experience required
