ATM card or phone theft can, unfortunately, occur anytime. To prevent your bank account from being hacked, the first thing to do is to block your bank account to prevent an unauthorized withdrawal of your money or having access to your private data.

All being said it is very necessary to know how to block your bank account instantly if your ATM card or phone is stolen deprive fraudsters of tampering with your bank account.

  • Make a call to your Bank's Customer Care and give your bank account details to them; Give your account number and names.
  • Log in to your bank's online banking platform and block your ATM.
  • You can also visit your nearest bank branch and report to them and ask to block your ATM card.
  • Dial the respective bank's codes with any available phone; enter your account number and names
Using your mobile phone, you can block your bank account from debit transactions by fraudsters.

To do this just simply dial the correct bank code of your bank on your phone. Immediately, you would be asked to type in your account number and names. Once you do that, your account will automatically be blocked from any debit transaction.

Some banks would require you to call customer care to block the account while others may require you to just use a USSD code.

Every bank has its unique USSD codes.

  11. IBTC Bank dial *909# from the mobile line linked to your account and select my bank and select service request then select block card.
  12. EcoBank send “STOP” ATM your account Number to 0806326226

IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is the unique identification number of the phone.

If your phone was stolen. The first thing you need to do is to go to the nearest police station and give a report. 

Take this police report and your ID card to your service or network provider. Your service provider will then help you to block both the phone and Simcard in the phone.

If you forgot your Phone's IMEI number, you can still block the phone and Simcard. What you need to do is to contact your service provider and request them to block your phone. You would be required to provide your ID card and answer some questions to confirm that you are indeed the true owner of the phone.

Please note that at the moment, this process is only available to some banks only. That is other Nigerian Banks are yet to activate theirs to make this possible. They should join soon though.
